Review of Starcrash (1978) by Zachary C — 12 Jan 2012
The ultimate 1970s space opera! Although dismissed as a mere Star Wars copycat by snobs, Starcrash owes more to Ray Harryhausen and Flash Gordon in terms of special effects and storyline. The stop-motion animation effects are on par with Harryhausen's (I liked the giant, sword-wielding robot and metallic drones).
Caroline Munro is at her sexiest here in a black bikini-type outfit with boots and gives a typically good performance as the assertive, ass-kicking Stella Star. Marjoe Gortner gives an appropriately campy performance as lead hero Akton.
Throw in a dead serious performance by Christopher Plummer, epic spaceship battles, a delightfully campy villain with an even funnier name (Zarth Arn), and a rousing music score by John Barry, and you have all the essential ingredients for a fun, late-1970s sci-fi movie.
