Review of Starcrash (1978) by R.john X — 21 Jul 2012
This movie is great because there are so many PEW PEW PEW laser beams. Plus whenever anyone, and I mean anyone, gets blasted there is a full blown sparky explosion that bursts out of them. Fantastic. I mean that is when they are not just turned into a green outline or disappear or simply fall over without any sort of sfx.
Munroe is amazingly gorgeous, throughout this picture. But has very little to do once the "love" interest Hasslehoff shows up. Plus she starts dressing in a bit more clothing. Boo. Weird hodge podge of a story ripped from the 1950s serial world of Flash Gordon - where the episodic pacing and scene chewing Joe Spinell who yells things like KILL THEM as he frantically points and waves.
There is a magic magician who can see into the future, make waves in his hands, and has other powers played by the flat faced ex child preacher Marjoe Gortner! Christopher Plummer stares dead ahead as he recites some of the most painful and idiotic dialogue ever.
Plus there is a HUGE plot hole when the bad guy orders the planet weapon he just BLEW UP deployed against the people he thought he just killed, but blowing up his weapon planet. Oh and huge spoiler - the good guys secret weapon is plowing a space city into the bad guys a'la STAR CRASH.
Dumb.
