Review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) by Scott T — 05 Feb 2018

Visually the movie was fantastic. Unfortunately that's about the only thing that was good about this movie. It seemed like the director was more interested in making a movie with twists and turns that no one could predict as opposed to going with a good story that people wanted to see and enjoy.

Luke Skywalker is arguably the greatest hero is cinematic history, I don't think it was Rian Johnsons place to take that character, beloved by so many, and ruin his legacy by turning him into a grumpy old hermit coward who couldn't even hold his own against an untrained little girl.

George Lucas gave the outline of how Luke went on to become the greatest Jedi that ever lived. Even Mark Hamill disagreed with the direction his character was taken. It seems like Rian Johnson was looking to prove he knew better than every Star Wars fan in the universe by turning these characters into something only he believed they could become.

This movie shows how this trilogy had no ultimate vision from the beginning. We should probably be laying much of the blame of this movie and it's bad storytelling and lack of vision on Kathleen Kennedy as she is the person with the final say and who also allowed this entire trilogy to start without having an end in mind.

Such a missed opportunity and a big letdown. There is still another movie in this trilogy, but after watching The Last Jedi, nothing was left leaving me wanting to see it. The only reason to watch the last movie is to hope it will save Star Wars from this disaster.
