Review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) by Joan W — 27 Dec 2017
This movie is similar to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode I of the prequels) in several ways: boring in places, lame humor, nice special effects, preachy tone. This is a Disney movie, though, so it is aimed more squarely at girls.
There is NO LIGHTSABER SWORDFIGHT, for example. There are close ups of people holding hands, though. For a Star Wars movie? Weird. It's also WAY WAY OVER TWO HOURS LONG! If it were Empire Strikes Back, I probably wouldn't notice, but this movie is so dull and has pointless sequences (I mean, really, they don't move the plot along at all).
The main difference is the Phantom Menace had a cool villain in Darth Maul and an awesome lightsaber battle to save it. This one has Leia flying like Mary Poppins. I wish I were making that up. My wife and I are taking our boys to see Jumanji during the Christmas break since they don't want to see this movie again.
At least Jumanji should be fun! Last Jedi will make tons of money, but we're probably going to pass on the next ones (especially since going to the movies is so expensive now). Maybe wait for Episode IX on Netflix, definitely pass on Last Jedi.
Sad!
