Quite a few missteps in the script. It was a fun film but not a good Star Wars film. Lots of quips and humor that was usually oddly timed. Lots of characters that received build-up in previous film just discarded in this one. Hard to describe how much this was a let-down. It was an OK film. It was a far-less-than-great Star Wars film.

Ep.VII, two years ago, was a New Hope Revisited... But I allowed for it, forgave it and even really enjoyed it because of what it was, how and when it was made and for the hope it might bring - and also out of pure unbridled love and nostalgia, which was banked on. But now Ep VIII has caused me to reverse course entirely and completely; oddly enough it affected my opinion of both movies and tainted Rogue One a fair bit as well if I'm honest. Its surface level. It's Star Wars candy. It preyed on nostalgia, refused to even explore anything it setup previously, and razed the entire triology-field using scenes nearly beat-for-beat lifted directly from both Return and Empire, thrown together in a chaotic hodge-podge with oddly politicized plot devices and dialogue, go-nowhere sub-plots with character arcs we don't care about, and all adorned with Marvel-style tension-killing quips and knock-knock jokes.

And that's just the non-bulleted bullet points..It spent the entire movie shouting loudly and clearly "the Star Wars you know from the past doesn't matter".
