The reason why some people love this movie and others hate it is much simpler than most people claim: The movie massively breaks continuity with the movies before it and acts like it plays in an entirely different universe (characters, physics, the force, change on a massive level, ignoring everything that's been established before).

Sure, there are plenty other bad things as well - but this sequel cannot be watched as a sequel to the 7 movies before it, which is what disappointed pretty much everyone who watched the 7 movies before it.
