Review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) by Theunbiasedone — 23 Dec 2017
A film absolutely deserving of a 0, as a result of the utterly cynical method in which it was conceived. No love was put into this film, it was written, produced and aired purely to make money and not to make a good film. Here are a few of my issues with the film.
-Exceptionally poor performances from the new cast, the whole film lacked the conviction and naturalistic acting of the original trilogy and the prequels, resulting in an almost parody-like film.
- Far too much humour for a Star Wars film, using humour to break tension is a GCSE level skill, but it only works if you've built tension in the first place. Once again adding to the overall parody-like feeling to this film. The opening to this film is the worst scene of any Star Wars film yet.
-Far too similar to Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi; the whole Rey story arc in this film is identical to Luke in ESB. Not to mention the absolute carbon-copy flight scene from the Millenium Falcon flying through the salt caverns on Krait, being identical to the Death Star run of RotJ.
-Questionable messages within the film. I have no trouble having strong female leads in this film, I applaud it in fact. But Poe Dameron getting humiliated, belittled and talked down to by a 'Vice' Admiral on the bridge in front of the entire crew for being a reckless dogfighter, is completely unreasonable. Especially considering a) the unprecedented destruction of the Rebellion's leadership (again) and b) him being one of the most experienced people still alive, his input is valuable and necessary. There would be uproar if the roles were reversed.
-Poor character development and writing; the entire Rebellion/Resistance leadership made stupid decision after stupid decision. Why didn't they jump to the Outer Rim to their allies? Why didn't they use the ship to get to the surface of Krait, while they remained shielded and ahead of the First Order? Why were they so far from Krait when they launched the transports? Why did they use a collection of impossibly slow bombers flying DIRECTLY AT a 'Dreadnought'? (No you can't simply blame Poe for the mission, Leia was his superior, she could've overridden him.
And I'd say worst of all, they wrote Luke out of the film after a cowardly way of facing Kylo Ren, while not writing out Leia. This is THE worst Star Wars film yet made, the prequels were objectively better films than this monstrosity, and felt more like Star Wars films. Compared to this pathetic attempt at a family-friendly Star Wars.
