A hollow, dumbed-down remake that hits most of the same narrative beats as the classic original without coming close to capturing its spirit. The writing is full of lazy contrivances; the characters mostly lack comprehensible motivations.
Upon release this film generated a tremendous amount of nostalgia-based goodwill, but in retrospect the treatment of classic characters will leave a lingering bad taste.
