Review of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) by Anders P — 08 Jul 2013
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars Episode II:Attack of The Clones were some of the biggest disappointments ever. Not because they were awful (They were) but because of what they had the potential to be. They contained awful stories, some horrific acting, and no sense of wonder. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith was a massive improvement, while its story was a mixed bag as was the acting, the special effects, incredible action scenes, great pacing, sense of wonder, and pounds of fan service, along with the ending duel (Which was one of the best duels in cinematic history) helped us overlook some of the flaws and it overall was a good movie that ended the series on a high note. So you would think that with one of the fatal flaws of the prequels out of the picture (Well, mostly anyway) that being George Lucas and his need to control every aspect of the film, that the studios would be able to make The Clone Wars as good if not better than Revenge of The Sith. Right?
The Clone Wars takes place between Episodes II and III, Anakin Skywalker, his new padwan Ashoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi must find Jabba The Hutt's kidnapped sun before the Hutt Cartel declares war on the thinly spread and relatively weakened Galactic Republic and its army of Clone Troopers.
Now the film opens up with a decent opening battle. I mean, it isn't among the franchise's best action scenes but it is still good enough. But then, the new character shows up. Everything from there-on out is a downward spiral. The dialogue gets worse, the action gets less intense and less well shot, and to be honest the story gets into a never ending series of cliches and predictable plot twist. And the animation, truthfully is average. It isn't bad, but it ain't exactly Pixar.
Truthfully, this movie disappointed me, coming off of Revenge of The Sith I thought the quality was going to improve, I was wrong. The Clone Wars TV Show contains good writing, badass action, and twist and turns along with unique visions of the Star Wars universe. Too bad the animated movie contains none of that. Watch the show, it is really good. But the movie flat out sucks.
