Review of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) by Mathlover9000 — 04 Jan 2018
An underrated film. This movie is not nowhere close to as bad as everyone says it is. In my opinion, this movie was actually good. However, there are some things that hold it back. Most characters actors were to decent good in this movie. I thought Qui Gon Jinn and Shmi Skywalker were great characters. Young Anakin surprisingly did not bother me. He was actually somewhat good in this movie. Jar Jar Binks was very funny but I thought making him a general was dumb considering his clumsiness. Nevertheless, it was hilarious to watch him on the battlefield. The fight scene between Obi wan, Qui Gon, and Maul was fantastic and entertaining to watch. The Pod Race scene was great. There is a good deal of emotion to be found. What holds this movie back for me is the somewhat plot. Palpatine's plan involving the Queen to sign the treaty was very different to understand. If Qui Gon's ship wasn't damaged, Anakin would have never been found. I feel like the sequences too conveniently fall into place. In terms of annoying characters, Padme was a bit unbearable at times. However, she was much worse in Attack of the Clones. Jar Jar was annoying toward the end. Young Anakin was a little too rude at times.
In the end, Star Wars The Phantom Menace is a good movie with decent-good characters, good amount of emotion, good story, but a slightly subpar plot. I give this movie a 7/10.
