Review of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) by Ken S — 21 Dec 2015
"Star Wars" went from a wonderful simple little series...to a big overblown showcase for the latest and greatest in computer effects. The prequels fail for me because they are meant to precede the original trilogy, but things look far more advanced than those ever did.
This movie at least has Darth Maul, but so much of it is boring and confusing and doesn't have the same feel as the old movies...and that is the biggest problem: things feel out of place, much like the additions in the special editions.
Of the prequels, this one (for me) is the most watchable. I recently rewatched it with the fresh eyes of an adult, and it's a mess but the Pod Race is cool and Darth Maul looks cool. That is the flaw.
..a few cool things here and there in a big special effects mess. Pretty boring and unmemorable.
