Review of Star Wars (1977) by Joshua M — 06 Dec 2015
The first Star Wars movie release and really changed everything in the world of movies. Its a special movie with interesting characters, a great story, and special effects that hold up still today. We meet iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Darth Vader. No matter how many times I see this movie it is still enjoyable and one of the best movies ever made.
We start off 19 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. The plans of the death star have been stolen and are in the possession of Princess Leia. She gives the plans to R2D2. R2D2 and C3PO escape to the planet tatooine and end up with a young Luke Skywalker. Then end up meeting and old Obiwan Kenobi and after Luke's Aunt and Uncle are murdered by the empire they decide to try and get transport to Alderon in order to return the plans to Leia's father. They meet up with a smuggler Han Solo and his friend Chewbacca.
Back on the death star the empire has Alderon destroyed and Leia put in prison soon to be executed. Once Luke and Obiwan get to whats left of Alderon they are pulled in by the death star. Obi wan goes to turn off the tractor beam and Luke and Han go to rescue Leia. During the escape Obiwan faces Darth Vader in a pretty pathetic lightsaber fight. Vader wins and Luke and Han Solo escape to the rebel base.
With the plans to the Death Star the rebels launch an attack on the approaching space station. Luke is able to blow up the Death Star with last second help from Han Solo.
While the overall story of this original Star Wars film is very simple the world and characters around it became infinitely deep and made Star Wars fans of most everyone. It is one of the most rewatchable movies ever made and launched a franchise that will probably live forever. Besides the lack of technology and fight choreography at the time of filming in 1976/1977 it really is hard to find a fault in this film.
