Review of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) by Johnathon W — 27 Aug 2013
I have reached the end of the Star Trek original series films in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and how was it? Well at least we ended on a positive note! It's not as good as lets say Wrath of Khan or The Voyage Home, but it's up there in the top three.
Acting is no doubt good in this film, they must have gotten the hang of it after 6 films and 4 seasons on air. The actors are confident and have good chemistry with one another on screen (although I hear off-screen it wasn't so lovey dovey...).
Direction by Meyer is good and has a smooth flow to the entire film. There are no long periods of inaction and at no point in time did I feel bored in any way. The script is adequate if not spectacular. Sound is above average, and the re-mastered blu ray I was watching had excellent clarity in the dialogue, but the effects were a little too compressed and digital.
Visual effects are not great, but satisfactory for the time. They are a big improvement to some of the earlier films, but when compared to other movies released in the same 2 year period its just below the status quo, although not by much.
Overall however I measure a film like this as did I enjoy the experience, and the answer is a resounding yes. I paused the movie when I went to the bathroom (as opposed to Star Trek V, where I just let it run...). So yes, it passed my bathroom test.
Would this appeal to a non-trekkie? No. Without knowing the back story of the characters this movie would be boring and incoherent. So if you are familiar with the Star Trek franchise this is a must see film by all accounts!
