Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Leighton T — 16 May 2011
I didn't find it to be as horrible as everyone says, but at the same time, it is definitely the weakest of the originals. The direction is lazy and dull at times, and obvious and annoying at others. The visual effects are quite poor comparatively, and the action sequences, fewer compared to the others, are poorly constructed and feel cheesy within the film's storyline. While its ontological take is intriguing, especially being that science fiction has always had that underlying tone, it leaves you feeling empty and sad. What if any of us went on a journey to find God was a merciless being willing to destory its own creations for its own advantages. Even the strongest of anti-God believers have that sliver of hope to a being who loves and cares for his creations, not a vindictive and hateful God seeking to punish those at his every whim; hope is instilled in all of us. I think, personally, it's better not to Know whether God exists, it requires Belief. It makes it a matter of Faith no matter what end of the spectrum you're on.
It makes you think, and that in itself is enough to give it this mediocre rating.
