Easily the worst of the Star Trek movie franchise. What carries the film through as watchable (by a thread, admittedly) is the humour that has been injected into the script, brought to life by the actors and highlighting the deep bonds of friendship between the crew, but even this by the end grows tired and repetitive, with the films final scene (in which Kirk, Spock and McCoy sing 'row, row, row your boat') being more cringeworthy than emotive.

The special effects as well seem to have taken a leap backward with this fifth film as well; whether due to budgetary constraints or poor direction, making the entire picture look like more of a budget television movie than the high quality production values of most Star Trek films. Even for the time this film was made, special effects were more advanced in films some years earlier, including previous Star Trek films.

Watchable for those who are long- time fans of the Star Trek franchise, but for those looking to dip into an enjoyable sci-fi flick should perhaps try elsewhere.
