Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Dathan R — 18 Jul 2014
Yikes...so much went wrong with what was supposed to be the last TOS cast Trek film, that no one blamed them for making another. Essentially as part of his contract for the fourth film, Shatner worked in that he would get the chance to direct the next film.
Sadly Shatner lacks the same skill behind the camera that Nimoy had. On top of which his performances are at their best when restrained, which both Meyer and Nimoy (and to some extent Wise as well), were able to get from him.
..but with no director to hold him back, Shatner's performance is a little too...Shatner. He also contributed to the story, a very non Trek story about finding God, which I'm sure he thought would be the ultimate final adventure.
Sadly budget constraints, plot problems, and a weak director make almost everything in this film fall short of success.
