Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Steve F — 29 Mar 2009
I think the big problem with 5 is ultimately the tone. I mean...characters are well developed, dialogue is all right, sets and effects are cool. But when you're constantly switching from light-hearted banter and slapstick to dark science fiction with heavy philosophy and metaphysics, it leaves the audience conflicted. Add on a heap of plot holes as well there. Come on, the Enterprise was SERIOUSLY the only ship available. Give me a break. Plus, the Klingon subplot was ridiculously underdeveloped.
I DO understand that Shatner wanted to make a Director's Cut for the DVD release and that Paramount said "No", so I can't help but be curious what that would have looked like.
So I give it three stars because it does succeed on many levels, but most of them are technical.
