Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Jamie T — 14 Mar 2008
Flawed, but seriously underrated. William Shatner proves fairly adept at film directing, even if the budget lets him down more than once. The performances are generally strong, and Laurence Luckinbill proves quite moving as Sybok, Spock's half-brother, a messianic leader who manages to earn one's sympathy.
The film also asks questions about the nature of God and religion that are somewhat more complex than normal mainstream fare. For all this film's faults, it deserves more recoginition.
