Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Alberta B — 24 Dec 2014
Underrated Star Trek movie, and the first one I ever saw. If it wasn't for this, we wouldn't have gotten Star Trek II, III and IV, so we wouldn't have gotten The Next Generation, and we wouldn't have gotten J.J. Abrams' new films.
The special effects are great for its time, and the music is very good too. There are also some really good performances from Shatner and co. The biggest problem with this film is that it is very long and slightly boring in the second half. There is no action at all so you have to be ready for that going into this. It is still pretty interesting because of the fairly good script and the great performances. I have never seen any other Trek film and I've only seen the first episode of 'Enterprise' out of all the TV shows, and some bits and pieces of 'The Next Generation' (which I found to be pretty boring).
Grade: B-.
