Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Justin — 22 May 2009
Well after seeing it, I can understand why someone would hate this movie and why someone would love it. You know how when a TV show gets made into a movie people will say, "it was just like a long episode"? Well this is like an episode turned into a long movie, if that makes sense, but it also feels more like a 70's sci fi classic then actually star trek...yeah, it's weird. The pace is little bit faster then I was expecting after all the 2001 comparisons, but there are two scenes in particular I could imagine people under and over the 23-35 age gap passing out to. For the most part the effects are amazing! I won't spoil anything about the plot here, because it was really cool in the end, but one scene in particular was really cool. I honestly couldn't tell what I was looking at some of the time. Was it a machine there? A ship here? Was that hole that lead somewhere else or just light? Was that a glowing spiked submarine mine or were my eyes playing tricks on me?
It was just cool to watch a movie twenty years old and have that response to it. The bad side is some of the characters are not fully realized, with Bones being in the movie with absolutely nothing to do but walk in and off the bridge, sometimes w/out even saying anything! But the relationship between Kirk and new Captain Decker is all you really need to enjoy. This is one of those oddities in the series that will be regarded as a favorite by some and an embarrassment by others. I happily fall into the former.
