Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Daniel F — 28 Aug 2010
How can a film be this huge, this colossal and this epic also make you yawn and have a weird over all depressing mellow feeling? Heck I cried in the beginning of this movie! from happiness mind you, the scene where Kirk is in the pod inspecting the ship...the emotional grandeur was just too much bare! however this film has many contradicting elements in it.
For one its almost completely humorless...and this needed a little humor in a bad way. Now I know star trek isn't known for being a comedy sketch but generally these characters by the nature of how they're written have dynamic emotions, one of which being humor. so this begs the question why for the most part if not the entire movie experience do they act like stale cardboard machines...eewwwhha it makes me quiver and cringe to even say that but its the truth.
Next is no real action and by action I don't mean fighting or violence no I mean action in the description of energy and momentum of a scene. This film feels down right sluggish. endless upon endless scenes of just watching the crew stare at the view screen its too much fortunately the art design of this film in my opinion was way ahead of its time.
Happily the ending and climax was a nice little pay off to our struggles and was an intriguing concept to say the least.
