Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Marc G — 15 May 2009
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) -- [6.5] -- It may not have captured the warmth and charm of the TV show's beloved characters, but "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is still a high-quality, interesting bit of science fiction.
I love the concept of the shadowy Vejur and how the mystery of its identity unfolds. The film is criticized for some overly-long sequences, like the initial unveiling of the Enterprise or the long journey through the Vejur cloud.
Maybe it's just because these types of protracted sequences are so rare, but I really dig them. The cloud sequence, with its surreal visual effects and Jerry Goldsmith's ghostly music, really gets under my skin in the best possible way.
The resolution leaves some cold, but I think it's classic, joyous sci-fi. Stephen Collins and Persis Khambatta help to make it a little poignant as well. This definitely isn't the Star Trek we all know and love.
It's something different, but it ain't bad.
