Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Dan T — 21 May 2009
Why even call this Star Trek? Apart from a single scene featuring Spock and a single scene featuring McCoy, the characters could be replaced with any cardboard nobody. the chemistry and the friendly banter that made these characters icons worthy of a leap from the small screen is completely absent. There's no interaction between the characters on a personal level, as their dialog is little and far between and serves no purpose but to advance the plot. A plot that is fantastically stupid and paper thin, only managing to last feature length because of the extended sequences where characters stare slack-jawed at effects that add nothing to the experience and serve only to bring the film's pacing to a crawl.
It's not interesting. It's not likable. It's just dull.
