Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by David B — 25 May 2009
This film probably would not have been made were it not for the success of Star Wars in 1977, and the market for space operas that opened up as a result. In style, however, Robert Wiseâ??s film owes more to Kubrickâ??s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Star Trek: TMP is interesting, fairly intelligent, and has some neat ideas (particularly the origin of the threatening â??Vgerâ??). Unfortunately, it isnâ??t much fun. Everything is a bit too clinical.
The dominant colour is white; even the uniforms make the crew look like â??70s nurses. At least there are no singing nuns!
