Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Charlie B — 19 Aug 2009
Ok, not as terrible as everyone says, it has some very good points (the score, the effects were amazing considering when it was made especially the end, the daringly philosophical plot), it's just a shame that it wasn't pulled off particularly well.
Lingering direction just seem to highlight some pretty bad acting, the amount of costume changes in the movie is very distracting (i hate myself for writing that, such a nit picky thing to say but it's true, were they just making up for the tv show or what?) and some glaring pretension (what was going on with that lengthy shot before the paramount logo?) prevent it from being anything more than an interesting and brave first instalment to a remarkably long film franchise.
