Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Chris G — 13 Jan 2010
This movie gets a bad rap for it's slow deliberate pace and thoughtful buildup, a change from most episodes of the show, but Star Trek TMP is a solid Sci-Fi movie in it's own right with more of a thinking persons storyline rather than the out and out bravado of later movies. The special edition is great and an improvement over some of the dated FX though the additions were done to fit in with the style of the time. There's virtually no action in this movie at all and while that bothered a lot of people that wanted the Space Western kind of thrills that the series pitched I thought it added a certain nuance to the Trek universe that was seldom seen before....
Still a great movie by todays standards though in it's original form I'm sure it probably looks horribly dated.
