Star Trek: The Motion Picture is the first film in the Star Trek film series. Despite all the cast of the television show returning and the direction of sci-fi legend Robert Wise, the film has always been considered one of the worst of the series.
The problem with the film is that it is too high minded. Star Trek has never been '2001: A Space Odyssey', it was never meant to be. Star Trek was suppose to be a western in space filled with action and drama.
Star Trek dealt with social issues, but it dealt with them head on. It is a shame that this film wasn't stronger...thank God for 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan'! Recommended for Star Trek fans only.
