Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Jason S — 10 Jan 2011
Often dismissed as a hollow and long winded shell of a film, behind it all is a fascinating and thoughtful exploration of humanity.
In the same vein of 2001, this film is profoundly epic and deep. The special effects, cinematography, and music are all perfectly executed. However, the film repeatedly gets caught in its own spectacle, and the whole thing seems way too drawn out at times. It's the group of 20-somethings closing out the bar that has to stop conversation to remind one another "this is the best night ever!" every minute or so... but if you listen very closely and have a bit of patience, there really IS a great conversation taking place there.
