To like this movie, you have to really understand that the core essence of Star Trek isn't action and adventure, but rather a deeper exploration of the human adventure. With this film we have a clear philosophical dilemma and, while you can clearly see that the filmmakers were showing off their new toys with the effects, this Star Trek film is exactly what Gene Roddenberry envisioned for Star Trek.
