I think you need to watch the TV SHOW to understand this movie or all the concepts that they want to show like the characters. The director wants to show EVERYTHING in every scenes, so thats why he films really slow.
The plot is not wonderful, is slow and a little bit boring if you want. The effects and the make up are very good! Thats a good job! Its like a long episode of two hours of the Tv Show Star Trek and this is just the begining of movies franchise.
