Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Kasey C — 23 May 2013
Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Very overrated if it is even rated at all. This is the 1979 version of an effects-driven movie. You were not clued into what was going on until literally the last 20 minutes of the movie.
There is no character depth. The only thing that made it pleasurable for me was seeing what the old characters looked like and comparing them to the new Star Trek. I will say the effects were great for the time but with such a mysterious and vague plot to back it up it just did not have the stuffing to make it good.
You cannot drift aimlessly through space for an hour and a half while making predictions about what the mysterious object will be, then try and blow me away with some earth-shattering reasoning. Audience was left in the dark for too long.
The only true positive of the movie was that it set the series up for a giant leap in the right direction for the sequels. 4/10.
