Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Luke B — 04 Mar 2015
This is a great, quintessentially "Star Trek" story. You cannot deny that. Of all the Star Trek movies, this one is most in keeping with Roddenberry's vision of the future, no doubt about it.
The special effects are pretty captivating and the music (Jerry Goldsmith) is perfect. The concept is interesting. The changes to the ship seem plausible. But there isn't enough dialogue, and dialogue always fueled Star Trek's best moments.
Star Trek was never about the special effects and to have them be the main character, essentially, gives the actors little to work with as far as enlivening the story. This movie gets a bad rap, and it's understandable why.
But every few years or so I give it a watch and remember that in many respects, it is a truly lovely film with a classic sci-fi tale at its heart.
