Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Chris — 24 May 2009
Too much time spent staring at models suspended in a black void. Cut in half all the shots of spaceships and energy clouds and there would have been time to, y'know, develop the characters. The special effects remain decent, this much later, but they aren't strong enough to carry such a bizarre, poorly explained story.
There was potential in the concept - and obviously the setting is beloved - but the writing didn't seal the deal. Introducing two new characters solely for the purpose of killing them off is pretty amateur.
