Review of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) by Tim S — 22 Dec 2009
Personally, I never understood how Star Trek fans didn't take Star Trek: The Motion Picture to heart. Essentially, at least in my opinion, it's a longer version of an episode of the old TV show, just with better sets, cameras and costumes.
It doesn't have the most satisfying of stories, but for the first film that turned out to be the first film in a series, it's a good place to start. It was famously supposed to be the second TV series of Star Trek when it was decided that it should be made into a film instead.
I'm glad that happened, really, and the original Star Trek was left alone on its own for years until Star Trek: The Next Generation came along. The effects may be dated and I suppose it can be a little bit boring at times, but overall, it was very satisfying to me.
