Review of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) by Mark C — 14 Mar 2009

This Star Trek film has some great action scenes as well as a great opening sequence. However there are many plot holes in this film which ultimatley let it down. Although I could go into great detail about these plot holes I won't bother as those who are fans of Star Trek the Next Generation won't need them spelling out for them.

However it was sad that this was the last film, with the Next Generation cast. It didn't seem a very fitting end to their adventures and being a big fan and having watched the television series since I was younger I was very disappointed.

The director Stuart Baird should take the blame for the poorness of this film. He had never even watched an episode of Star Trek and later claimed it was "silly" yet somehow he was still chosen to direct the film.

A much better choice would have been Jonathan Frakes who had proven himself with the direction of Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. The film is virtually a rip off of superior Star Trek films, The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country.

There were also some important deleted scenes which were not included which could have helped improve the film and wrap up the stories of certain characters and make it seem like it really was TNG's final outing.

These included such things as the character of Doctor Crusher leaving the Enterprise to take command of Starfleet Medical. Sadly however many of these scenes were ommited from the film. Instead we are left with a film which has a rather bizzare plot, which really doesn't make much sense and which throws away many of the established plots and trademarks built up during TNG's television series.

There are a couple of scenes in the film which are still enjoyable such as the action sequences and great special effects If you like the Star Trek films then its worth seeing at least once. However as the last film with the Next Generation, it is a big let down and I am not surprised that many of the cast such as Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis have criticised this film.
