Review of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) by Stu A — 10 May 2009
Oh boy. Recently caught this again on TV and though it wasn't as bad as I remembered it being, it still is pretty weak.
The plot could have been made into something really interesting. Picard is confronted by a younger clone of himself, opening up a nature vs. nurture debate within him.
The flaw in this film is that it tries to make Star Trek into an action franchise in a very weak way. It feels silly to have Picard involved in a car chase, spouting one-liners, wielding two phasers John Woo style. It's like they tried to turn him into John McClane....from Die Hard 4. Also, the final ship to ship battle lasts the ENTIRE second half of the film. It plays like it was thought out by two 5 year-olds who each had a toy ship that endlessly shoots at the other. Shinzon is a failure as a villain because he essentially wants to annihlate Earth just because he's mopey.
I remember this film ending when I saw it in a theater and being embarrassed. This wasn't what I'd grown up on, and if it was, all the worse.
