Review of Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) by Zane T — 30 Sep 2011
I was never a fan of any of the Star Trek series, but I found a few of the movies to be tolerable. I think it was a good idea they killed off Kirk in the seventh movie or Generations, as it is called. Nemesis is a hard movie to watch.
It's like a collection of all previous TNG movies. The idea is rather silly. Picard is being sought by a clone of himself for reasons that are never understood. There's a lot of back and forth reminiscent of The Wrath of Khan, but the movie never comes off as anything more than a two-part episode.
The think about the movies with from the original series, they always seemed to be shooting for something more. But TNG movies always seemed like an expansion of the show, just like The X-Files movie.
It's no surprise that there is a lot of time devoted to Data, considering that Brent Spiner co-wrote this movie and in the end, he pulls a Spock by sacrificing himself. But Data was no Spock. I don't think this was originally intended to be the last TNG movie, but poor reviews and a poor box office return properly killed any chance for The Search for Data.
LeVar Burton has publicly said this movie sucked and Jonathan Frakes claims it would have been better if he had been given the chance to direct. Maybe the problem was people got tired or the same old stuff with the 10th one appears.
Apparently, it stopped the reception that the even numbered movies are the better ones, because apparently the Star Trek reboot, which is the 11th one, is reported to be better.
