Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Travis J — 23 Nov 2008
Admittedly, it does have potential. I mean, 1980's, star trek and my current port of call, all combined into one action-packed thrill ride. Hell, the Klingon Bird of Prey even sets down in the park like 10 blocks from my house.
.. but yet, so... hokey. Charming, yes, and written in a fashion that allows it to be canonical as well as independent but yet.... so... hokey. And just a little after school special twinged preachy to boot.
All said, I really only have one complaint about the film, though - that being the scene at the end where the crew is playing in the water after having saved the Earth and crash-landed their stolen alien spacecraft under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Sorry, but have you ever felt the temperature of the water in the bay!? Future notwithstanding, that water is fucking cold! Not to mention that the currents near the Golden Gate itself would make swimming sort of an ungood idea.
However, considering that this is the film that spawned the phrase "nuclear wessels," I guess all, or at least most, is forgiven.
