Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by David B — 25 May 2009
Another fun instalment after the lacklustre Search for Spock. Returning to a court marshal after stealing and blowing up the Enterprise in the previous film, the heroes discover the Earth being threatened by a probe that can only be answered by humpback whales, which are extinct in the future.
On a stolen Klingon Bird of Prey, Kirk et al travel back to the late twentieth century to grab some whales and bring them back to respond to the probe. This is a much more tongue-in-cheek entrance in the series, complete with Spock confronting a punk with a ghetto blaster (how very eighties!), and Chekov wandering around San Francisco looking for nuclear wessels.
In between there are lots of messages about environmental disaster and the stupidity of the Cold War.
