Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Andrew C — 06 Jun 2009

The ongoing storyline begun in Wrath Of Khan limps to a conclusion here, in an eco-friendly and cheaply budgeted bit of hogwash that seems to be simultaneously pandering to the mainstream while giving the Trekkies what they want.

Setting the story in 80s San Francisco lowers the budget, making this a very cheap entry in the series, and its attempts at environmental concerns are about as subtle as Shatner's acting. Every member of the Enterprise crew gets their moment to shine, although this smacks much more of behind the scenes agent wrangling than plot considerations.

Some elements of humour hit the spot, otherwise this marks a new low in the franchise.
