This is my favourite of the Star Trek movies (until No. 11) - I like the elements of humour that were introduced. They made it all seem less pompous.
Mind you, if they managed to figure out a way of going back in time, couldn't they have put that ability to good use in other ways as well as saving whales. They might, for example, have prevented 9/11 and saved a lot of humans as well. But I guess there are no alien races out there who love humans as much as whales.
