Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Stu A — 10 May 2009
An alien probe threatening Earth leads the Enterprise crew on a mission back in time to bring some humpback whales into the future (where they are extinct). Don't ask.
This is the funniest of the original Star Trek movies, with the crew struggling to fit in with 1980s culture. The difference between the humor in this and later films is that here we're laughing with the characters, not at their expense. Its environmental message is necessary (and in fact, political efforts because of this movie took humpback whales off the endangered species list).
