Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) by Patrick L — 31 Mar 2013
Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home is my absolute favorite of the Star Trek films that I have seen.
It is arguably the most complete film ever made in that it combines science-fiction, drama, humour, romance, environmental concerns, the Humpback Whale and a more visible role for Chekov.
He has his own feature among the dvd features and the overall design of the dvd is superior to 90% of other films.
The crew is facing disciplinary hearings upon return to Earth after catastrophic events when a probe arrives at and starts to destroy their Earth. Fortunately, they determine the cause and time travel to an earlier time period to effect a solution and the charm of this film is in the "fish out of water" interactions of the crew with more primitive humans. The dvd design is excellent and well thought out.
Some of the reviews below are worse than any of the Star Trek films could ever be and what is it with accusing Leonard Nimoy of being on drugs? Sad and disrespectful.
Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home is my favorite of the Star Trek films that I've seen and arguably my favorite movie overall as well as the most complete, unique film of all time! The crew return to Earth in a stolen or seized Klingon vessel from the planet Vulcan to face Starfleet charges.
As they approach Earth, a unique probe endangers Starfleet and other vessels, space stations and Earth. Spock determines that the probe is trying to contact humpback whales which are extinct in their era. In a desperate gamble, the crew travel through space and time to an earlier time period on Earth to find and relocate whales to save their Earth.
Humour is a huge part of the film while exploring earlier Earth. Chekov has a more visible presence in this film and there is an underlying message throughout the film of being better stewards.
Of the planet and all that is on it. 10/10.
