What is not to love about the crew of the Enter...The Bounty...going back in time to save humpback whales in order to answer a probe and save the Earth from total destruction? I mean it is one of the most fun stories in the franchise.
Totally ridiculous yet somehow it makes sense in a weird kind of way. A more lighthearted tone was taken in this film, which is mostly why it works. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it doesn't ever get to a point where your suspension of disbelief gets too stressed.
The comedy is intentional, your laughing with the creators, not at them.
