Four years ago, J.J. Abrams breathed new life into the Star Trek franchise with his exciting reboot. Abrams continues that streak with the latest Star Trek installment, "Star Trek: Into Darkness". But is "Into Darkness" as good as its predecessor?

It is certainly as visually stunning and action-packed as "Star Trek". Likewise, the returning cast members are great, though the Kirk/Spock friendship feels a bit forced.

The biggest problem with "Star Trek: Into Darkness" is the plot. The plot takes a long time to get off the ground, and even then the narrative is unfocused. Part of this is because the movie can't decide who it wants the villain to be.

Of course I know who I want the villain to be. The addition of Benedict Cumberbatch to the cast as John Harrison (aka *Spoiler*) is perfect. Cumberbatch makes for an excellent villain, and a big part of that is his sinister, penetrating stare and terrifying voice.

Despite its weak story, "Star Trek: Into Darkness" is a great film, sustained by dazzling effects and an outstanding performance by Cumberbatch. Simply put, "Into Darkness" is just as fun as the first film, but not as good.
