Review of Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) by Melanye B — 26 Apr 2010
The worst TNG movie, possibly the worst "real" Trek movie. One thing I think the TNG creative staff got obsessed with was showing us "sides" of Picard with the movies. In Generations, we got sad Picard.
In First Contact, we got angry Picard. Now we have rebellious Picard. A little too hippie/new age for my taste ("be in the moment" crap), too silly (you rebooted Data by making him sing show tunes? Does this tell us more about Dr Soong than we wanted to know?) and too juvenile (did Dr Crusher really just ask Troi how her breasts were feeling?).
With the guest stars this one had, F Murray Abraham, Donna Murphy and scifi genre vet Anthony Zerbe (whom I was very excited to finally see in Trek), it should have been much better. But by now, it was becoming obvious that the TNG movies just weren't working out.
It seemed like they were just cranking this puppies out, throwing them up on the wall and seeing what stayed. And lots of us fans still went to see them but kept wondering (more and more loudly) why we were seeing them.
I'm still waiting for a great TNG movie. I don't see it happening.
