Review of Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) by Movie G — 23 Aug 2011
Star Trek Insurrection is a movie that could be called so average that it's bad.
The plot is that The Enterprise are sent to a planet where Data was on a mission but malfunctioned. They soon find that the planet has healing powers. LaForge finds that he is no longer blind, Riker & Troi rekindle their long lost relationship, and several things happen. It's then decided that the Federation wants tosteal the planet and while the natives are sleeping transport them to a holographic version of the planet. Picard & crew don't want this to happen and are forced to rebel.
I'll be honest, I hate this plot. I don't find it that interesting. It's not absurd as other plots like Part IV but that movie was so absurd it was funny, this one just so average that you don't really care.
That's my big problem with this movie, it's just so average. It's not that it's bad, it's just not very good. You don't really care about what's going on.
The acting is great from the crew, (ie Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, et cetera), but none of the new characters like the natives are really all that interesting. They do okay, but you don't really end up caring about them. Once again, just average.'.
The music is handled by Jerry Goldsmith, and it's surprisingly average considering the amazing stuff he did earlier on in the series. It uses some older pieces which are good but the new pieces are AVERAGE!
The direction is good. It's once again done by Jonathan Frakes who plays Commander Riker. He's good, but could be better. The camerawork is pretty good, as are editing and all other behind the scenes stuff is decent.
The effects are generaly pretty good, but there's a few parts where they look noticeably bad, especially any of the scenes where Data goes invisible. There's one part where he's wearing an invisible suit but takes off the mask so you can only see a floating head and it looks terrible!
All in all, Star Trek: Insurrection is just plain unenjoyable. In fact, I'd rather watch Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and it's a terrible movie! The movie just has nothing that stands out as cool, or new to the series and it really just feels like a two-part episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I really could only recommend this one to someone who is really bored. It's probably my least favourite Star Trek film and I don't even think mot Star Trek fans could enjoy it.
