Review of Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) by Matthew Franklin C — 28 Sep 2008
This movie wasn't the best of the Star Trek films, but it did what TNG did best: exploration of moral and philosophical questions - in this case, calling into question the Millian idiom that the good of the many outweighs the good of the few or the one. In this it was well-intentioned but kind of ham-handed, with too much emphasis being placed on the suffering of the Ba'ku and not enough on the opposing counterarguments, usually made by a frothing-at-the-mouth F Murray Abraham.
Some funny moments and moments of self-deprecation on the part of the crew (referencing the fact that none of them are getting any younger), and another throwaway romance for Picard. But, all in all, a solid Trek movie, if somewhat under-appreciated.
