Review of Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) by Tony H — 01 May 2010
There is a great movie in there somewhere. Directed by Jonathan Frakes again hot from First Contact and written by one of the best TNG writters/producers of TNG Michael Piller. Both of them know the TNG cast and characters inside out, so what happened? Of all the things the Enterprise crew overcame over the years it looks like studio interference was one bad guy they couldn't defeat.
Aparently no one wanted another 'dark' film like First Contact. Which means Paramount told them they wanted a family frendliy rating. Bad move. They could have very easily had the light and dark in this film, but it was thrown out.
Then they said make a diffrent ending, why? We all know the bad guy is gonna get it, but with the original ending he would still be beaten and gotten what he wanted as well. And then theres the kiss. It is so obvious that Picard and Anij are mad for each other, yet we're denied seeing them together showing a bit of love for each other.
.. bad move Paramount. This is what makes it a bit os a mis-mash of films. Call your movie Insurrection and have a loaming face of evil on the poster and then not deliver as much menacing in the finished film.
... bad move Paramount. This maybe where the feeling of an extra long episode comes from. They couldn't go too far on TV, but this is film they could have and the ever brilliant execs spoli what could have been an equal to First Contact.
