Review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) by Scott M — 24 Oct 2008
My all time favorite Star Trek movie, this film truly gets the feel of the original series exactly right. The spirit of the film is perfectly summed up in dialog: "It's about loyalty and sacrifice." The depth of the closeness of these people is illustrated wonderfully and the cast rises to the occasion.
William Shatner gives his finest and most wrenching performances as James Kirk is told of the murder of his son. Instead of taking it on the chin and getting back to business, Shatner plays it human. He stumbles backward, as if hit in the gut, and agonizingly has sobs ripped from him. Then, in the biggest emotional climax of the film, he sacrifices the Enterprise to gain an advantage and takes out the Klingon boarding party.
There are some flaws, as there are in every Trek film, and the Klingon captain is a little one-dimensional. But it's a type of Trek film we'd never see again and it stands out at one of the best.
